How To Hitch A Trailer

Regardless of hitch system, the hitch’s strength rating needs to be equal to or greater than the GVWR of your trailer.  The maximum capacity of your trailer could never be larger than the minimum rated part in the towing system. 

HITCHING USING A BALL MOUNT SYSTEM

1.Make sure each part of the towing system is good.

2.Make sure the hitch receiver, ball mount, coupler and safety chains or cables (including hitch lock or other components) are OK for the loaded capacity of your trailer. Each component must be equal to or greater than the GVWR of the trailer.

3.Make sure that the size of the ball mount is correct and fits the coupler. 

4.Make sure the height of the ball mount,which needs to be parallel to the ground when towing.

5.If not permanently affixed, attach your ball mount according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

6.Attach the suitable hitch coupler to the ball mount.

7.Attach the safety chains from your trailer to your tow vehicle.Note:

    1.The chains should crisscross and be an X under the trailer tongue so that it would catch the tongue in case the tongue drop on the ground if the trailer disconnects with the tow vehicle.

    2.Each chain shall have a separate attachment point to the tow vehicle and be rated for the GVWR of the trailer.

8.Connect any pin connectors for lighting and, if applicable, brakes.

9.Make sure your trailer lights are in working order.
